Christi-Anne Castro

Profile

Associate Professor, Ethnomusicology

Director, Center for Southeast Asian Studies

Christi-Anne Castro received her Master's and Ph.D. in ethnomusicology from the University of California, Los Angeles. She joined the Department of Musicology faculty in 2005. Since then she has taught classes introducing School of Music, Theatre & Dance students and non-music majors to "world music" and other topics. In 2010-2011 she was delighted to participate in the Faculty Scholars Program in Integrative Medicine at the University of Michigan in order to further her interest in music, health, and healing, and she created a new course called "Music and the Body" which was then taught at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. In 2012, her book Musical Renderings of the Philippine Nation (Oxford University Press) won the Global Filipino Literary Award for Nonfiction, earning it "special cataloguing" status and a place in the Southeast Asian Collection in the Asian Reading Room at the Library of Congress.

She has served as the director of the Center for Southeast Asian Studies since 2013 (for which she was also associate director in 2010-2011). Her other service includes chair of the Musicology Graduate Admissions Committee, Associate Editor of the journal Music and Politics, and member of the advisory board for the Asian Music journal.
