Colleen Conway

Colleen Conway is professor of music education. She holds bachelor's and master's degrees in horn performance and music education from the Eastman School of Music and a doctorate in music education fromTeachers College, Columbia University.

Conway's scholarly interests include instrumental music education, preservice music teacher education, qualitative research, professional development for the inservice music teacher, and the mentoring and induction of beginning music teachers. She has presented at national and international conferences (including NAfME, The Midwest Clinic, AERA, and ISME) and has published more than 90 articles on these topics in all of the major music education journals. Conway is currently editor-in-chief ofArts Education Policy Reviewand on the senior editorial board at Oxford University Press.Books in print include:Great Beginning for Music Teachers: A Guide to Mentoring and Induction(2003, Rowman & Littlefield);Handbook for the Beginning Music Teacher(2006, GIA);Teaching Music in Higher Education(2009, Oxford);Handbook for the Music Mentor(2010, GIA);Handbook of Qualitative Researchin American Music Education(2014, Oxford); andCurriculum and Assessment in Music Education (2015, GIA).TheOxford Handbook on Preservice Music Teacher Education in the United Stateswill be released in January of 2019. Conway plays horn in the Adrian Symphony and lives in Tecumseh, Michigan with her husband, Dr. Thomas Hodgman and their children Sarah (age 20) and Tommy (age 16).


This workshop is geared towards instrumental music teachers but others are welcome.

Instruction and group sharing will focus on instrument pedagogy for woodwind and brass instruments. Participants should bring their primary instrument and other instruments will be provided. Topics covered include: equipment, posture/hand position/set-up, breathing, articulation, tone, materials for instruction, woodwind and brass chamber music, use of these instruments in the ensemble. Friday class will include a short chamber recital performed on secondary instruments.


Monday through Thursday 2:00 PM - 7:30 PM; Friday 10:30 AM - 4:00 PM

Application deadline: June 16, 2018

Applicants not enrolled in the MM in Music Education Summer Program must submit an online application, complete the $30 non-refundable application fee, and pay the workshop fee listed below.

Students enrolled in the U-M MM in Music Education Summer Program should register for this workshop through Wolverine Access. Currently enrolled U-M students do not pay the application or workshop fee.


No audition required.

Applicants not enrolled in the MM in Music Education Summer Program are accepted upon completion of an online application and $30 non-refunable application fee. All applicants will receive an email notification confirming their admission.

Department of Music Education Summer Workshops may be taken as part of the MM in Music Education Summer Program degree program, as a workshop for professional development enrichment without college credit, or for graduate credit (NCFD).
