Workshop for Dream of the Red Chamber (VIDEO)

On September 10, the San Francisco Opera (SFO) presents the world premiere of Dream of the Red Chamber , a new English-language opera by Bright Sheng, SMTD's Leonard Bernstein Distinguished University Professor (composition), with a libretto co-authored by Professor Sheng and David Henry Hwang, the award-winning writer of plays, musicals, and films.

Last winter, a group of voice and piano students had the prestigious opportunity of performing a workshop production of the opera here at SMTD, documented in this video. The workshop aided the creators in preparing the work for stage, and was attended by Professor Sheng and Mr. Hwang as well as the work's stage director and the conductor, Stan Lai and George Manahan, and representatives of SFO's administration, including the general director-designate Matthew Shilvock.
