Professor Kuster Wins Prestigious OPERA America Grant

Kristen Kuster, assistant professor of composition, was named one of eight recipients of OPERA America's Opera Grants for Female Composers, made possible through the The Virginia B. Toulmin Foundation. The new grant program provides support for the development of new operas by women, both directly to individual composers and to opera companies producing their work. Kuster was awarded $12,500 to support the development of a work entitled Old Presque Isle, a 75-minute opera inspired by the Northern Michigan lighthouse that is rumored to be haunted. It is written for female singer, six trumpets, two percussionists, and men's chorus and features a libretto by poet Megan Levad, an English lecturer at LSA and assistant director of the Helen Zell Writers' Program. Complete information on the new grant program and all of the recipients can be found in the OPERA America press release.
