Spring Commencement FAQ

Do I need a ticket?

Graduates and guests will not need tickets for the SMTD Commencement at Hill Auditorium.

What is the schedule the day of commencement?

3:00 p.m. - Graduate check-in begins - Hill Auditorium Box Office

3:00 p.m. - Auditorium opens for guest seating (general admission)

4:00 - 6:15 p.m. - Ceremony

Are seats assigned?

Seating for the ceremony is general admission. There are sections reserved in the rear of the auditorium for guests with limited mobility. There are also a limited number of wheelchair and companion seats available. Wheelchair seats can be requested through the online RSVP system.

Do we have a rehearsal for commencement?

No.

Do I need to wear a cap and gown?

Yes.  You are required to wear academic attire to participate in the ceremony.  Caps and gowns are available at any of the central campus bookstores. (Please note that doctoral attire is available only at the Michigan Union Bookstore.)

Bachelor's and Master's Degree Graduates and Candidates:
Academic attire may be purchased beginning in mid-March at all three bookstores listed.

Doctoral Degree Recipients:
Doctoral degree recipients who plan to attend the University Graduate Exercises are responsible to rent or purchase the hood with which they will be hooded, as well as their cap and gown. This attire may be rented or purchased at the Michigan Union Bookstore.

Custom attire can be purchased any time during the year. Please allow four to six weeks for the delivery of custom attire orders.

What color tassel should I have?

Music- PINK

Fine Arts in Theatre, Fine Arts in Dance- BROWN

Bachelor of Science - SCIENCE GOLD

What do we do about parking?

All University structures are open and free to the public commencement weekend.  The closest parking structures to Hill Auditorium are located at 216 S. Thayer Street, and at 201 Fletcher Street (next to the Power Center).
