2017 Concerto Competition Winners Announced

The 2017 School of Music, Theatre & Dance Concerto Competition winners have been announced. The winners in the undergraduate category are:

Stuart Carlson (BM '18, violin), performing Berg's Violinkonzert. Carlson's studio instructor is Stephen Shipps and he holds an undergrad scholarship.

Samuel Kidd (BM '17, voice), performing Mahler's Kindertotenlieder. Kidd's studio instructor is Freda Herseth and he holds an undergrad scholarship.

In the graduate student category, the winners are:

Kelly Ann Bixby (DMA '18, voice), performing Britten's Les Illuminations, op. 18. Bixby's studio instructor is Freda Herseth and she is a funded graduate student instructor.

Caroline Kim (DMA '18, cello), performing Bloch's Schelomo: Rapsodie Hébrague. Kim's studio instructor is Richard Aaron and she holds a graduate scholarship.

The competitions took place during the first week of January at Hill Auditorium. Each of the winners will perform their competition piece with one of the School's orchestras in an upcoming SMTD concert at Hill. Details will be available soon on the Calendar of Events. Congratulations to the winners!

SMTD students Zoe Kumagai, Stephanie Aboukasm, and Adam DesJardins are among students profiled in an LSA article about the "Michigan in Washington" program, in which students intern at various Washington, DC organizations and businesses, including the National Symphony Orchestra, the Kennedy Center, and the Washington Performing Arts Society.    12/10/2013
