 03/26/2014

Michael-Thomas Foumai (DMA '14) was honored as the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Distinguished Composer of the Year for his work Flash Fiction at the Awards Brunch on March 26 during the 2014 MTNA National Conference in Chicago.

The Distinguished Composer of the Year Award is given to the composer of the outstanding composition submitted as a state-commissioned work. The award, in the amount of $3,000, is made available by the MTNA Foundation Fund. Flash Fiction was selected from among 29 works entered in this year's competition, and commissioned by the Michigan Music Teachers Association. It was performed live at the conference on March 24, 2014.

Foumai has recently been commissioned by the Composers Conference at Wellesley College and will serve as composer-in-residence of the 2014 Alabama Orchestra Association. Winner of the 2013 American Prize for Orchestral Composition, Foumai was named the Composer of the Year by the Sioux City Symphony Orchestra and awarded the Jacob Druckman Prize from the Aspen Music Festival. His music has been recognized with numerous awards including three BMI composer awards and Presser Foundation Award.

Foumai's orchestral works have been performed all over the United States and he has performed around the world. He holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Hawaii and master's and doctorate degrees from the University of Michigan, where he is currently a doctoral fellow.

MTNA is a nonprofit organization of nearly 22,000 independent and collegiate music teachers committed to furthering the art of music through teaching, performance, composition and scholarly research. Founded in 1876, MTNA is the oldest professional music teachers' association in the United States.
