2012 Musicology Department Awards and Accomplishments

Students and Recent Graduates

Alexander Cannon (Ethnomusicology) has accepted a position at Western Michigan University beginning in Fall 2012.

Abby Anderton (Historical Musicology) successfully defended her dissertation entitled "'In den Ruinen der alten Philharmonie': Classical Music, Propaganda, and the American Cultural Agenda in West Berlin (1945-1961)."

J. Ryan Bodiford (Ethnomusicology) has received a Rackham International Research Award, an Institute of International Education (IIE) Graduate Fellowship, and a Rackham Humanities Research Fellowship for fieldwork in Chile.

Jesse Johnston (Ethnomusicology) will be teaching a graduate seminar at the University of Michigan during Fall 2012.

Laura Kennedy (Historical Musicology) accepted a tenure-track position at Furman University beginning in Fall 2012.

Yona Stamatis (Ethnomusicology) has accepted a tenure-track position in the University of Illinois, Springfield and will begin teaching in Fall 2012.

Faculty

Louise K. Stein has been awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for College and University Teachers (awarded for use in 2012-13) for her project “Opera and the Transformation of Public Life in Naples under the Marquis del Carpio, 1683-1687.” Stein was elected a senior fellow in the Michigan Society of Fellows. She is also Faculty Advisor to the LSA Music program, active in the Program in Medieval and Early Modern Studies, and a faculty affiliate in Romance Language and Literatures.

Musicology graduate student Elizabeth McLain has been awarded a prestigious Lurcy Fellowship for research in France during the 2014-2015 academic year.   03/14/2014

SMTD students Zoe Kumagai, Stephanie Aboukasm, and Adam DesJardins are among students profiled in an LSA article about the "Michigan in Washington" program, in which students intern at various Washington, DC organizations and businesses, including the National Symphony Orchestra, the Kennedy Center, and the Washington Performing Arts Society.    12/10/2013
