Michigan Men’s Glee Club to perform at Sphinx Finals Concert

 02/08/2017

The University of Michigan Men’s Glee Club (MGC) will join forces with the Sphinx Symphony at the 20th Anniversary Finals Concert of the Sphinx Organization on Sunday, February 12 at 2 pm, at Orchestra Hall (Max M. Fisher Music Center) in Detroit. The MGC will be led by music director Eugene Rogers, assistant professor of conducting at the U-M School of Music, Theatre & Dance.

Rogers will lead the Glee Club in “Seven Last Words of the Unarmed” by Joel Thompson, which was adapted to be performed with symphony orchestra. Made possible, in part, with support from Linda and Stuart Nelson, the newly arranged work powerfully addresses the killings of unarmed black men by authority figures. The piece is paired with Roger’s arrangement of "Glory" from the film Selma. Both works were previously the subject of the Michigan Media film Love, Life & Loss, which aired on Detroit Public Television last year.

“We are honored to partner with Michigan’s Glee Club on such an important milestone year," said Afa Dworkin, Sphinx president and artistic director. "The work of Joel Thompson and Eugene Rogers has been truly visionary; we feel that the piece embodies the power of the arts during this critical time for our communities.”

The Sphinx Organization is the Detroit-based national organization that works to create positive change in the arts field and in communities across the country through its mission of transforming lives through the power of diversity in the arts.

The Finals concert presents the Senior Division finalists of the Sphinx Competition accompanied by the all Black and Latino Sphinx Symphony Orchestra, with guest conductor Thomas Wilkins. It will also feature four-time Grammy Award-winner Karen Clark Sheard and African-American poet Jessica Care Moore.

General admissions tickets are $15. Box seating, with the opportunity to meet the composer, is also available, as are group tickets. Visit the DSO website for more information.
