Last May, alumni and current students of the SMTD Department of Musical Theatre, along with current and past faculty, celebrated retiring department chair Brent Wagner with an extravaganza in New York City. Titled Maize & Blue on Broadway, the two-hour event, at the August Wilson Theatre, featured dozens of alums and students performing a spectrum of musical theatre numbers, many of them Professor Wagner's personal favorites.
The show was produced by Gavin Creel and Matthew Rego, written by Nick Blaemire and David Kirshenbaum, and included new musical numbers featuring music and lyrics by Benj Pasek & Justin Paul, as well as Andrew Lippa.
Many other alums and faculty worked in critical behind-the-scenes roles to make the show a success, including Ted Stevenson, who created a wonderful video (below) documenting both final rehearsal and the performance.
Maize & Blue on Broadway, which was performed for a sold-out house, raised funds for the new Michigan Musical Theatre Ambtheassador Endowment Fund (MMTAEF), created by alumni. The fund will support a number of musical theatre initiatives including the Brent Wagner Speaker Series, which will bring top musical theatre professionals to SMTD to teach and present master classes. Donations are welcome at any time by visiting the MMTAEF giving page.
